Die Welt hat mit Grand Theft Auto 4 in den vergangenen Tagen den größten Start eines Entertainmentproduktes in ihrer Geschichte erlebt. Binnen der ersten Woche konnten Take2 und Rockstar Games auf dem gesamten Globus für Playstation 3 und XBox 360 über sechs Millionen Exemplare verkaufen.

Selbst Branchenexperten hatten im Vorfeld nur zwischen vier und fünf Millionen Exemplare erwartet. Am ersten Verkaufstag sollen bereits 3,6 Millionen Spiele über die Ladentheke gewandert sein und damit circa 310 Millionen US-Dollar umgesetzt haben. Insgesamt konnten mit den sechs Millionen Exemplaren gut 500 Millionen US-Dollar eingenommen werden.

Mit einer knappen Anrede meldete sich auch Strauss Zelnick, Chairman bei Take2, zu Wort. Er gratulierte den Entwicklern zu dem Riesenerfolg und der Erschaffung des "Must-Have-Titels", der nicht nur für einen Umsatzrekord gesorgt hätte, sondern auch für Traumwertungen in der ganzen Welt. Grand Theft Auto 4 war am 29. April für XBox 360 und Playstation 3 international zeitgleich in den Handel gekommen.
