Funcom - Interview mit Funcoms Creative Director Joel Bylos
Onlinewelten, Anja Gellesch: Hello Joel. Thank you for your time and congratulation on your new position as a Creative Designer for the three Funcom live games (Anarchy Online, Age of Conan, The Secret World). You have to be a very, very busy man as the Lead for the centralized live team.
Funcom, Joel Bylos: Thank you! Yeah, it’s definitely a busy time, not just for me but for all of Funcom. There are so much stuff we want to do with all of our games, and at the same time we’re making some pretty major changes on a corporate level that will shape the new direction for the company.
Onlinewelten, Anja Gellesch: Your new role is a great opportunity for you to realize some visions. What are your goals? What's the biggest challenge for you now?
Funcom, Joel Bylos: My goal is first and foremost to get an effective development process going for all three games running smoothly, with regular updates and a community who feels like their feedback is listened to and appreciated. Things are definitely falling into place, and the new team is looking really good. I know we’ll be able to do some great things for all three games going forward.
The biggest challenge is getting a handle on what each games needs and how to deliver that based on the priorities we need to make. There are both advantages and disadvantages to having one, centralized team working on all three games (personally I think the advantages greatly outweighs the disadvantages), and it’s important for us to establish a process that brings growth to each game.
It’s definitely a challenge, but a very rewarding one! We’re all very excited about having this centralized live team and all the great things we’ll be able to do for the games.

Onlinewelten, Anja Gellesch: Can you tell us a bit about the new structure for the team and your role as a Creative Director? Is it just one team working on all three live games now? Or do the core teams still exist? How do you organize and split the team to cater for the needs for all three games and their communities?
Funcom, Joel Bylos: The new team follows the same general structure of our old content teams, artists, coders, scripters, designers and writers working in tandem. Together with the executive producer, Scott Junior, we plan and prepare the updates and make sure we can put them together effectively.
There is one group within the team working Age of Conan and The Secret World, while Anarchy Online still maintains a smaller group of developers within the team who are more used to old code and tools of Anarchy. Still, all the developers work together and one of the things that’s so great about the single team structure is making share ideas and know-how is shared between everyone working there and all three games.
Currently we are working sequentially, one update for The Secret World, then an update to Age of Conan etc, but as the team settles into the development rhythm we will try to deliver features to the games at around the same time.
